Young Chiefs fan who has survived 4 different open heart surgeries has dreams come true
KANSAS CITY, Mo. (KCTV) – For Chiefs fans, every game is special. But for one youngster, Monday night’s game is as big as it gets.
Meet 5-year-old Josiah Medler, a kindergartner bursting with personality. His family lives in Southern Illinois, but somehow he’s become a rabid Chiefs fan.
“Well, I was watching the Super Bowl game, and I saw him and Taylor, and started freaking out,” Josiah said.
Yep, you can guess who his favorite player is.
“Travis Kelce.”
Why?
“Because I love him!” Josiah exclaimed.
He loves the Chiefs so much that his mom and dad drove to Kansas City in order to buy him some gear. And he was so excited about it that he and his mom did a TikTok video.
“And for some reason, maybe his cuteness, it just went crazy,” mom Dorie said.
Crazy as in 3.9 million views!
But there’s more to his story than just his love for Travis Kelce. Josiah has survived four different open-heart surgeries.
“There was times that I even collapsed in tears because I didn’t know if he was going to make it,” father Jedidiah said.
“I remember sitting in a hospital five years ago not thinking that we’d ever go home,” Dorie said. “I remember saying those words: ‘we’re never going to leave this place.’”
Through it all, he kept his spirits up. And there’s a happy ending to the story.
“One of the surgeons put his arm around me and he said, ‘he’s going to grow to be the little boy he should be’” Jedidiah said. “And here he is today.”
When Chiefs fans saw his TikTok video and heard Josiah’s story, they reached out, providing tickets for Monday night’s game.
“It’s my dream come true,” Josiah said. “Because I’ve never been to a game before.”
He spent a few minutes at Arrowhead when he bought his hat in July, and he got to visit it via the magic of television on a Sunday morning visit to KCTV5. But Monday night, he’ll actually be inside to cheer on his favorite team and favorite player.
“I hope Travis sees this because then Taylor would see it too,” Josiah said.
